Awakening Exhibition

During awakening, [ PROXY ] invites visitors to encounter themselves within the works. The exhibition shines a light on both inner and outer worlds while engaging themes of the exoteric, epiphany, and enlightenment. In doing so, it reveals [ PROXY ]’s broader mission: to elevate dialogue and cultivate expansive cultural conversations. [ PROXY ] sets out as a new kind of third place; an artful space that fosters exploration, contemplation, and joy.

awakening is an ode to expansion, nurtured by the interplay of light and darkness. Bringing together artists who dream in tessellations of luminosity, texture, and geometry, the exhibition reveals compositions that seem to pulse beyond the surface of the prints. In bringing together the two artists, “Awakening” sets out to demonstrate how soulful discovery depends equally on the conscious and the subconscious.

awakening holds a mirror to the psyche; reflecting both the immediate image and the unseen residue of its memory. The act of looking becomes the subject as you, the viewer, complete the work.

Connor McManus synthesizes fleeting moments from around the world and weaves them into a kaleidoscopic symphony bursting at the seams. He repaints the world as if seen through a new looking glass; is there a greater truth than the emotive remembrance of the memory? Every iteration unlocks a new meaning.

Zaire Miles-Moultrie reanimates the traditions of etching, engraving, and printmaking within a digital framework, conjuring a mystical, dreamlike realm. Echoing the visual language of Enlightenment-era depictions of the “New World,” his figures and forms are imbued with contemporary talismans and motifs that both entice and unsettle, inviting the viewer to engage or resist.

awakeningaffirms a primal impulse: to transform sensory experience into a unique personal narrative. Through highly individualized reflection and reconstitution, the artists’ chromatic interplay offers subtle clues to their sources while forming a resonant visual duet. Ultimately, awakeningasks us to recognize the inner self as the only constant across a shifting field of impressions.

Look for programming throughout the exhibition including artist talks, gallery engagements, and more. The opening reception will be held on Friday, April 17th from 5-8pm.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Screening: The Competition Movie (Architecture Competition Documentary)

We are excited to announce that we will be screening “The Competition” at PROXY! The Competition is a thrilling documentary of the architectural competition for the National Museum of Andorra.

"For anyone with the slightest suspicion of the insidious, futile processes at work behind the glossy façades of the world's so-called 'starchitects', a new documentary by Spanish architect Angel Borrego Cubero makes for compulsive viewing" - THE GUARDIAN, OLIVER WAINWRIGHT

Following five “Star-chitects” and their teams through the development of entries for this invited international design competition, The Competition is a compelling and fascinating account of what goes on behind the scenes of world-renowned architecture offices. From the grueling hours of the interns and associates, to the hubris of those famous names that dominate the architectural hallowed halls, the documentary shows what it takes to design on the world’s biggest stages.

Join us for a screening of the film here at PROXY!

We will have a brief gathering with snacks and beverages for sale and an introduction during the half hour leading up to the screening which will begin promptly at 6:00pm.

Please consider donating to keep compelling programming at PROXY flowing to our creative community! A suggested donation of $15 per seat goes a long way towards helping us cover costs and remaining a thought-provoking arts organization in your Greensboro Community! Contributors will receive a drink ticket as a thank you! Click link below:

Synopsis

A documentary movie constructed as an almost uncomfortable but intensely fascinating account of how some of the best architects in the world, design giants like Jean Nouvel or Frank Gehry, toil, struggle and strategize to beat the competition. While nearly as old as the profession itself, architectural competitions became a social, political and cultural phenomenon of the post-Guggenheim Bilbao museums and real estate bubbles of the recent past. Taking place at the dramatic moment in which the bubble became a crisis, this is the first competition to be documented in excruciatingly raw detail.

Jean Nouvel, Frank Gehry, Dominique Perrault, Zaha Hadid and Norman Foster are selected to participate in the design of the future National Museum of Art of Andorra, a first in the Pyrenees small country. Norman Foster drops out of the competition after a change in the rules that allow the documentary to happen. Three months of design work go into the making of the different proposals, while, behind doors, a power struggle between the different architects and the client has a profound impact on the level of transparency granted by each office to the resident documentary crew, and which has a definite influence in the material shown in the film.

The presentations to the jury happen in one intense day close to election time in Andorra, becoming a hot event in the tiny country, with media all around the international stars that may help shape its future. Of the four remaining architects three show up to make personal presentations, every one of which becomes a fascinating study in personality, strategy, character, showmanship… and a dramatic moment in which any detail becomes both important and irrelevant, the line between failure and success perfectly imperceptible. But does the jury have the last word?

The Competition is the first film documenting the tense developments that characterize architectural contests. On October 10th 2013, The Competition opened the Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam (AFFR), with an audience of more than 500 people. The participation at the AFFR was as the same time the World Première of this documentary and since then it's being shown all over the world.  An Official Selection film for programs such as the Vancouver Intl. Film Festival – VIFF’15, the Intl. Film Festival of Contemporary Art from Naples – Artecinema’15, the Intl. Festival of Film on Art from Montréal – FIFA’15; the Intl. Documentary Film Festival – DocumentaMadrid’14, the Intl. Festival of Film on Art from Florence – Lo Schermo dell`Arte’14, The Competition has been also awarded the Architecture Dissemination Award at the XIII Spanish Biennale of Architecture and the First Prize at the COAM Awards ’14, an annually given award by the Architects Association of Madrid.

Day one exhibition

At "Day One," [PROXY] embraces how it came to be and where it is in development and in its life. "Day One" bares its bones and heart in equal parts. The show explores themes of self meditative approaches in artists creating their own haven and hints at how [PROXY]] itself vies to become a haven of its own. [PROXY] envisions being a new third place; to create an artful space that invites exploration, contemplation and joy.

"Day One" is an admission of novelty, of beginnings. Bringing together artists who create worlds initially for themselves and then to dream in and ultimately to create from, "Day One" sets out to find that expression establishes the self and that self is expression.

"Day One" is three distinct yet parallel worlds of three scintillating series. Gaze a moment too long and the works begin to buzz and claim a bodily presence of their own.

Gabe Fonorow gathers lines as one gathers one's thoughts. One at a time, one after another and at length.

Les Caison Ill processes in strokes, imparting a distinct mood. One iteration at a time, his fields of vision create a palpable atmosphere.

Paul Mok performs acts of dedication to the ritual and the worlds it builds. His practice fractals, blossoming new life into the inanimate.

"Day One" bears witness to the generative and transcendental power of repetition as a means to meditate. In exploring the essence of the repetition, artistic rituals behind the works reveal the nature & interests of their unique makers and practitioners. In laying bare the specificity of the artists' rituals, "Day One" nods to the psychological phenomenon coined by Carl Rogers: what's the most personal is the most universal.

[PROXY] hosted its Grand Opening Celebration on October 25, 2025 as we invited the community to join us for the opening of its “Day One” exhibition. The talented invited artists hail from both local and national art realms of Winston-Salem, Kernersville, and New York. The work featured is an intense and awe-inspiring mix of technical and figurative compositions that bring to light the ever-obsessive ‘work of the artist’ as a quest for understanding, expression and catharsis. Come see the work currently on display in the gallery, up through the end of February.
